The Karnataka health department has offered free cochlear implant surgeries, worth lakhs of rupees each, to around 200 children from poor families with hearing impairments under the 'Aalisu Kanda' initiative, giving them a new lease on life.

The Karnataka health department has announced that it will provide free cochlear implant surgeries to approximately 200 children from low‑income families who suffer from hearing impairment. Under the 'Aalisu Kanda' project, each surgery, which normally costs lakhs of rupees, will be offered at no charge, giving the children a chance to regain hearing and improve their quality of life.

The initiative, launched by the state health ministry, aims to address the unmet medical needs of economically disadvantaged children across Karnataka. By removing the financial barrier, the program hopes to enable early intervention and better developmental outcomes.

Health officials say the project will be implemented through a network of district hospitals and specialized centers. Families will be selected based on medical need and financial status, and the surgeries will be performed by trained audiologists and surgeons.

The free surgeries are expected to significantly reduce the burden on families and help the children integrate more fully into school and community life. The program is part of a broader effort by the Karnataka government to improve access to essential healthcare services for vulnerable populations.
