The Karnataka High Court has set aside SC/ST Act proceedings against seven individuals linked to a property dispute, ending the case.
In a recent order, the Karnataka High Court quashed proceedings initiated under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against seven persons accused in a property dispute. The court held that the allegations did not satisfy the criteria for invoking the special protection law and therefore dismissed the case.
The seven individuals, whose identities were not disclosed, had been named in a complaint alleging violation of the SC/ST Act in connection with a land ownership conflict. The High Court examined the evidence and concluded that the dispute was purely civil in nature, unrelated to any caste-based atrocity.
By terminating the criminal proceedings, the court emphasized that the SC/ST Act is intended for genuine cases of caste-based oppression and should not be used to settle ordinary property disagreements. The decision restores the status quo in the underlying civil matter, which will now be addressed through regular property law channels.
