The Karnataka High Court has prohibited mechanical arrests and directed police to follow specific guidelines when registering FIRs based on social media content.

The Karnataka High Court has issued a landmark order that bars the practice of "mechanical arrests" – arrests made without proper investigation – in cases arising from social media posts. The court directed law enforcement agencies to adhere to a set of procedural guidelines before filing a First Information Report (FIR) based on online content.

Under the new guidelines, police officers must verify the authenticity of the alleged wrongdoing, assess the credibility of the source, and ensure that the complainant’s identity is established before proceeding with an FIR. The order also emphasizes that any arrest must be supported by concrete evidence rather than a mere online allegation.

Legal experts say the ruling aims to curb the misuse of social media as a tool for frivolous or malicious complaints and to protect citizens from arbitrary detention. The High Court has asked lower courts and police departments across Karnataka to implement the directives immediately.

The decision comes amid growing concerns nationwide about the rapid increase in FIRs filed solely on the basis of social media posts, which often lead to unwarranted arrests and strain on judicial resources.
