Karnataka's chief minister Shivakumar has agreed to meet sugarcane growers protesting for a higher Fair Remunerative Price (FRP).

Sugarcane growers across Karnataka have staged protests, insisting that the state raise the Fair Remunerative Price (FRP) to reflect rising production costs. The farmers argue that the current FRP does not cover their input expenses and threatens their livelihood.

In response, Chief Minister Shivakumar announced that he will personally meet the protesting farmers to discuss their demands and explore possible adjustments to the FRP. The meeting is being arranged as part of the government’s effort to address agrarian distress and prevent further disruption of the sugarcane supply chain.

State officials said the dialogue will focus on reviewing the FRP calculation methodology and ensuring that any revision aligns with both farmer welfare and the fiscal constraints of the state. No specific date for the meeting has been disclosed, but authorities expect it to take place shortly.

The issue comes at a time when Karnataka’s sugar industry, a significant contributor to the state’s economy, is under pressure from fluctuating market prices and input costs. Stakeholders hope that a timely resolution will stabilize the sector and reassure the farming community.
