Karnataka CM Shivakumar Cites Weak Monsoon, Alerts to Water and Power Shortages

Chief Minister Basavaraj Shivanna Shivakumar warned that the below‑average monsoon this year could trigger acute water and electricity shortages across Karnataka.
Bengaluru, Sep 14 (The Indian Express) – Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Shivanna Shivakumar said the state’s monsoon performance this season is well below normal, raising concerns over water availability for irrigation and drinking purposes. He highlighted that reservoirs and tanks are already showing lower-than-expected levels, which could force the government to impose water-use restrictions in the coming weeks.
Shivakumar also warned that the power sector may feel the impact, as hydro‑electric generation depends heavily on monsoon-fed reservoirs. With reduced inflows, the state could face a shortfall in electricity supply, prompting the need for load‑shedding or increased reliance on thermal plants.
The CM urged citizens to conserve water and electricity, and assured that the administration is coordinating with the water resources and energy departments to mitigate the shortfall. He called for a collective effort to manage the scarcity until the next monsoon arrives.
State officials are monitoring rainfall patterns closely and will release detailed guidelines on water allocation and power management as the situation evolves.
