Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Delayed Again Amid NEET Protests

✍️ The Hindu 🗓 23 Jul 2026, 03:34 PM 👁 5

The Karnataka government has postponed the expansion of its cabinet for a second time after protests over the NEET exam. Political aspirants and opposition parties expressed disappointment.

The Karnataka government announced that it will not expand its cabinet at this time, a decision that follows a wave of protests over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The move marks the second postponement of the expansion, which was originally slated for this month. Critics say the delay undermines the promised inclusion of new ministers and could stall governance plans. The government has not yet set a new date for the expansion, citing the need to address the concerns raised by students and educators.

Political aspirants who had been hoping for new portfolios have voiced their disappointment, with several opposition leaders calling the decision a political setback. The protests, which saw large crowds in Bangalore and other cities, demanded reforms in the NEET examination process and greater transparency.

The state’s Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the government would revisit the cabinet expansion once the situation stabilises. Meanwhile, the opposition has urged the administration to provide a clear timeline for the appointment of new ministers.
