Karnataka police have filed a case against BJP members for allegedly trying to erase the names of 7,561 voters from the electoral roll.
The Karnataka police have registered a criminal case against several members of the state BJP for an alleged attempt to delete the names of 7,561 registered voters from the official electoral roll. The investigation, carried out by the district crime branch, says the alleged tampering was discovered during a routine audit of the voter database in Bangalore.
According to the police report, the suspects accessed the electoral database and tried to remove the entries of the identified voters, potentially influencing the upcoming local elections. Election officials flagged irregularities when the names failed to appear in the latest verification list, prompting a forensic review of the system logs.
BJP representatives have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the party respects the integrity of the electoral process and that the allegations are unfounded. A senior party spokesperson said the matter would be addressed through legal channels and that the accused would cooperate with investigators.
If proven, the act could attract charges under the Representation of the People Act and the Information Technology Act, both of which penalise manipulation of electoral data. Legal experts warn that such violations can lead to imprisonment and disqualification from holding public office.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed the identities of the individuals booked. Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
