The Karnataka cabinet has cleared new policy frameworks aimed at attracting data‑centre investments and fostering marine biotechnology along the state’s coastline.
The Karnataka state cabinet has recently approved two policy frameworks – one for data centres and another for marine biotechnology. The measures are designed to create a favourable ecosystem for large‑scale digital infrastructure and to tap the state’s 300‑kilometre coastline for biotech research.
Under the data‑centre policy, developers will receive incentives such as tax exemptions, streamlined single‑window clearances and subsidised power tariffs. The aim is to position Karnataka as a premier hub for cloud services and data storage, generating high‑skill jobs.
The marine biotech policy focuses on encouraging startups, research institutions and export‑oriented firms to explore marine resources. It proposes funding support, skill‑development programmes and facilitation of public‑private partnerships.
State officials said the policies align with Karnataka’s broader vision of becoming a leader in emerging technologies and diversifying its economy. Implementation will be monitored by the Department of Information Technology and the Department of Fisheries.
Analysts expect the dual approach to attract both domestic and foreign investment, complementing India’s national digital and biotech agendas.
