Justice Bhuyan Calls Supreme Court Collegium’s Transparency Lacking

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has raised concerns over the Supreme Court collegium’s opaque decision‑making, noting that recent resolutions did not provide reasons for appointments and transfers.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, publicly questioned the collegium’s lack of transparency in its recent appointments and transfers. He pointed out that several resolutions issued by the collegium failed to include any rationale behind the decisions, making it difficult to assess the suitability of the candidates.

Bhuyan warned that such opacity could allow unsuitable individuals to enter the judiciary, potentially undermining public confidence in the legal system. He emphasized that citizens have a right to be informed about the deliberations that lead to judicial elevations and transfers.

The concerns were echoed in a report by JALDI, which noted that transparency levels vary across India’s higher courts. The report suggests that clearer disclosure of collegium deliberations could strengthen accountability and public trust in the judiciary.
