A federal judge in the United States has halted former President Donald Trump’s attempt to revoke birthright citizenship for U.S. citizens, ruling that the government cannot strip citizenship granted at birth.

On Tuesday, a federal judge in Washington dismissed former President Donald Trump’s proposed order to revoke birthright citizenship for U.S. citizens, citing constitutional protections. The ruling, issued by Judge John Doe of the U.S. District Court, declared that the executive branch lacks the authority to retroactively strip citizenship granted at birth.

Trump’s order, announced in a brief executive memorandum, aimed to limit citizenship for children born to foreign parents on U.S. soil. The judge found the measure to be an overreach of executive power and inconsistent with the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause.

In his opinion, the judge emphasized that citizenship conferred by birthright is a fundamental right that cannot be revoked without due process. He also noted that the order would create a legal vacuum, leaving many individuals in uncertain status.

The decision is expected to prompt a review of the policy by the Department of Justice and may lead to further litigation over the scope of executive authority in citizenship matters.
