The Jammu and Kashmir administration has set up a committee to review and revise the wage structure for the region’s artisans and weavers, aiming to align earnings with current market conditions.
The state government of Jammu and Kashmir announced the formation of a high‑level committee tasked with re‑examining the pay scales for traditional artisans and handloom weavers. The committee will assess existing wage norms, compare them with prevailing market rates, and recommend a revised structure that reflects the cost of living and productivity of the sector.
Officials said the move comes after prolonged concerns from craft unions that current wages have not kept pace with inflation and rising raw‑material costs. The committee is expected to include representatives from the Department of Handicrafts, senior economists, and leaders of artisan associations.
The review is slated to be completed within the next three months, after which the revised wage guidelines will be presented to the state cabinet for approval. Stakeholders hope the new framework will boost the livelihoods of thousands of craftsmen who form a vital part of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural and economic fabric.
If adopted, the revised wages could also enhance the competitiveness of Kashmiri handicrafts in national and international markets, potentially attracting greater investment and tourism to the region.
