The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a swift rollout of prepaid smart electricity meters across all its offices, aiming to improve billing transparency and reduce power theft.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has issued a directive to expedite the installation of prepaid smart electricity meters in all government offices. The move is part of a broader effort to modernise the state’s power infrastructure and curb illegal consumption. Officials say the new meters will allow real‑time monitoring and easier payment for office electricity usage.

The directive comes after a review of the state’s energy management system highlighted significant losses due to outdated metering. By replacing conventional meters with smart units, the government expects to improve revenue collection and reduce the cost of power supply.

Implementation will begin next month, with the state’s electricity department coordinating the rollout. The plan includes training for office staff on meter usage and maintenance. The government has pledged to complete the installation within six months.
