Jharkhand launches Abua Awas Yojana to provide homes for 8 lakh families

The state government has unveiled the Abua Awas Yojana, a housing initiative aimed at delivering residential units to nearly eight lakh eligible families across Jharkhand.
Jharkhand's Department of Rural Development announced the rollout of the Abua Awas Yojana, a large‑scale housing programme designed to construct and allocate homes for roughly eight lakh families living below the poverty line. The scheme is part of the state’s broader effort to improve rural living standards and curb homelessness.
Eligibility is limited to households that meet income criteria set by the state, own no permanent dwelling and are registered under the state's poverty‑alleviation database. Beneficiaries will receive a fully constructed house with basic amenities such as water supply, electricity connections and sanitation facilities, at no cost.
Implementation will be overseen by the Jharkhand Housing Board in partnership with local panchayats and private contractors. The first phase targets 2.5 lakh families and is slated to begin construction by the end of the fiscal year, with a projected completion timeline of three years for the entire programme.
Officials estimate that the initiative will not only provide shelter but also generate employment in construction and related sectors, thereby contributing to the state's economic growth.
