The Jharkhand High Court has asked the state government to explain the prolonged delay in appointing the Chief Information Commissioner of the State Information Commission, with the next hearing scheduled for November 19.

The Jharkhand High Court issued a notice to the state government seeking clarification on why the appointment of the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of the State Information Commission has not yet been completed. The court emphasized that the commission must be functional to ensure timely handling of information requests under the Right to Information Act.

In its order, the bench asked the government to specify the timeline by which the selection and appointment process for the CIC will be concluded. The court noted that the prolonged vacancy hampers the commission's ability to adjudicate appeals and complaints.

The matter is slated for a further hearing on 19 November, where the court expects a detailed response from the state administration regarding the steps taken to fill the post and the expected date of appointment.

No additional directives were issued, but the court warned that continued delay could invite contempt proceedings if the government fails to comply with the deadline.
