The Janata Dal (United) party has expressed its opposition to the renewal of the Farakka water treaty. Sanjay Kumar Jha, the party's national vice president and Rajya Sabha MP, raised the issue of Bihar's long-term water security in the upper house of parliament. He emphasized that the state's water needs should be prioritized before renewing the treaty. The Farakka treaty was signed in 1996 between India and Bangladesh to share the waters of the Ganges river. Jha's statement highlights the importance of addressing Bihar's water concerns before proceeding with the treaty's renewal.
