The recently announced business legislation in Jammu & Kashmir is being criticised for potentially endangering residential neighbourhoods and compromising flood‑mitigation measures in Waheed Para.

The Jammu & Kashmir government has introduced a set of business regulations aimed at attracting investment and streamlining commercial activity across the union territory. While the policy is presented as a catalyst for economic growth, residents of Waheed Para have voiced alarm that the rules could blur the line between commercial and residential land use.

Local community leaders argue that the new provisions may permit construction of business premises within densely populated neighbourhoods, increasing the risk of encroachment on drainage systems that were designed to manage seasonal floods. They warn that any alteration to the existing layout could weaken flood‑control infrastructure, putting lives and property at greater risk during the monsoon.

State officials acknowledge the concerns and say that the legislation includes safeguards to protect public safety, but they have not yet detailed how these will be enforced in Waheed Para. A review committee is reportedly being set up to examine the impact on flood‑prone zones before any commercial projects are approved.
