The Jammu & Kashmir Wildlife Department has issued a warning urging people not to disclose precise locations of migratory birds to protect them from disturbance and poaching.

The Wildlife Department of Jammu & Kashmir released an advisory cautioning the public against revealing the exact nesting or resting sites of migratory birds that visit the region each winter. Officials said that detailed location data can be misused by poachers and unregulated tourists, potentially threatening the fragile habitats of these species.

The department highlighted that while general information about migration routes is shared for educational purposes, pinpointing precise coordinates could facilitate illegal hunting and disturbance of breeding grounds. It urged bird‑watchers, photographers, and local residents to report sightings without disclosing GPS data publicly.

Authorities have pledged to increase monitoring in known hotspots and collaborate with conservation NGOs to ensure the safety of the birds. The advisory aligns with broader efforts to safeguard biodiversity in the ecologically sensitive valleys of the Himalayas.

The warning comes as the region expects a surge in migratory bird activity this season, with several species listed under national protection. The department plans to conduct awareness campaigns in local schools and communities to reinforce responsible wildlife observation practices.

Violations of the advisory may attract legal action under the Jammu & Kashmir Wildlife Protection Act, which imposes penalties for activities that endanger protected fauna.
