The Jammu & Kashmir government has released a detailed plan to eliminate hazardous chemicals from agricultural production, aiming for a safer harvest across the region.
Srinagar – The state’s Department of Agriculture announced a comprehensive strategy to gradually remove hazardous chemicals from farming practices in Jammu & Kashmir. The blueprint outlines steps to replace toxic pesticides and fertilizers with environmentally friendly alternatives, while providing training and support to cultivators.
The plan emphasizes a phased approach, beginning with high‑risk crops and regions, and includes monitoring mechanisms to track progress. Officials said the initiative aims to protect farmer health, reduce soil contamination, and improve the overall quality of produce.
Stakeholders, including farmer groups and agricultural research institutions, have been consulted in drafting the scheme. The government intends to roll out awareness campaigns and subsidised access to safer inputs as part of the implementation phase.
If successfully executed, the programme could set a precedent for other Indian states seeking to modernise their agricultural sector while safeguarding public health and the environment.
