The Jammu & Kashmir government is close to finalising a new media policy that will bring social media platforms under its regulatory ambit, officials said.

Srinagar – Officials from the Directorate of Information have indicated that the Jammu & Kashmir administration is on the verge of completing its new media policy. The draft, which is being prepared under the state government's media reform drive, proposes to extend regulatory oversight to social media platforms operating in the region.

The policy aims to create a uniform framework for traditional and digital media, addressing issues such as content verification, misinformation and compliance with local laws. While the exact enforcement mechanisms are yet to be detailed, the draft suggests that platforms will need to register with the state authority and adhere to content guidelines.

Stakeholders, including media houses and digital rights groups, have been invited to provide feedback before the policy is formally adopted. The government has emphasized that the move is intended to safeguard public interest without stifling legitimate expression.

If approved, the policy will become one of the few state-level regulations in India that explicitly cover social media, marking a significant step in Jammu & Kashmir's effort to modernise its media governance structure.
