Air quality in Jaipur worsened after Diwali, with the Sitapura area recording an AQI of 273, while Manasrover and Shastri Nagar also posted very high readings.

The ambient air quality in Jaipur has deteriorated sharply in the days following Diwali celebrations. Monitoring stations recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 273 in the industrial area of Sitapura, placing the air in the 'hazardous' category.

Neighbouring zones also showed alarming figures, with Manasrover registering an AQI of 237 and Shastri Nagar at 217. These levels exceed the safe limits set by the National Air Quality Standards and pose health risks, especially for children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.

The primary pollutants driving the spike are fine particulate matter, specifically PM2.5 and PM10, which are known to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to limit outdoor activities and to use masks when venturing outside.

Experts suggest that the surge is linked to the widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali, combined with stagnant atmospheric conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground. The state pollution control board expects a gradual improvement over the next 72 hours as wind patterns change and particulate matter settles.
