The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is installing its NavIC navigation system on Karnataka’s coastal fishing vessels at no cost, enabling weather alerts and emergency messages even in network‑less deep‑sea areas.

ISRO has begun free installation of NavIC devices on boats used by coastal fishermen in Karnataka, aiming to boost safety in deep‑sea fishing where cellular networks are unavailable.

The NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) system, developed by ISRO, can transmit weather forecasts and emergency alerts directly to the vessels, allowing fishermen to receive timely information about storms, cyclones, or other hazards.

The initiative, part of a broader effort to modernise the fishing sector, will see the devices fitted on boats across the Karavali region, with the government covering all costs. Fishermen will be trained on using the equipment.

Officials say the technology is expected to reduce loss of life and property at sea, and could serve as a model for other coastal states.
