ISRO Enhances Satellite‑Based Disaster Management in Jammu & Kashmir

India's space agency ISRO has rolled out an expanded satellite‑driven disaster management system across Jammu & Kashmir, aiming to improve early warning and response for floods, landslides and other natural hazards.
ISRO has announced the deployment of an advanced satellite‑based disaster management framework throughout Jammu & Kashmir, a region frequently hit by floods, landslides and flash floods. The new system will harness real‑time data from the agency’s remote‑sensing satellites to provide early warnings and situational awareness to local authorities.
The initiative is part of India’s broader National Disaster Management Plan and is expected to enhance coordination between state disaster management officials and the Indian Meteorological Department. By integrating satellite imagery with ground‑level monitoring, responders can identify high‑risk zones and mobilise resources more efficiently.
Officials say the upgraded system will also support post‑disaster damage assessment, enabling quicker rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. ISRO’s satellite data will be made available to the state’s disaster management portal, ensuring that timely information reaches frontline teams.
The expansion follows a series of pilot projects in other vulnerable states, where satellite technology has already proven its value in mitigating the impact of natural calamities.
