Insufficient monsoon rains have left Indore's key reservoirs and ponds more than half dry, with groundwater levels showing little improvement.
Indore is grappling with an escalating water crisis after the monsoon failed to deliver adequate rainfall this season. Data collected after August shows that more than half of the city's major ponds are now significantly depleted, intensifying concerns ahead of the peak summer months.
Groundwater surveys across several localities indicate that the water table has not risen despite the passage of the monsoon, suggesting that the limited precipitation has been insufficient to recharge underground reserves.
One of the most affected reservoirs, Yashwant Sagar, is reported to be six feet below its full‑capacity level. The shortfall underscores the broader strain on the city's water storage infrastructure and raises alarms about the sustainability of water supply for domestic and agricultural use.
City officials have warned that if the current trend continues, Indore could face a severe water shortage next year, prompting calls for water‑conservation measures and exploration of alternative sources.
