India’s Wholesale Price Index rose to 9.92% in August, the highest in nearly a decade, as prices of food, fuel and manufactured goods climbed sharply.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the latest Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data on Tuesday, showing a 9.92% year‑on‑year increase for August. This marks the steepest rise in WPI inflation since 2014.
The surge was largely driven by higher prices of food items, which climbed by 10.5%, and fuel and lubricants, which rose 12.3%. Manufactured goods also saw a notable jump, adding 8.1% to the overall index.
Economists warn that the persistent rise in wholesale prices could translate into higher consumer inflation, potentially prompting the Reserve Bank of India to tighten monetary policy. The government will review the data in its upcoming economic policy meeting.
