India's UPI to be officially launched in more European and African tourist destinations
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will soon be available for use in additional major tourist countries across Europe and Africa, simplifying foreign exchange for Indian travelers.
India's digital payment system, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), is set to expand its global footprint as it becomes officially usable in a number of additional European and African nations that attract large numbers of Indian tourists. The move is expected to streamline cross‑border transactions and reduce the need for cash or currency exchange when Indians travel abroad.
The expansion follows earlier efforts to promote UPI as a universal payment solution, positioning it as a convenient alternative to traditional card and cash payments for overseas visitors. By enabling UPI transactions in these new markets, Indian travelers will be able to pay for goods and services directly from their Indian bank accounts.
Industry officials say the rollout will be coordinated with local financial regulators and payment networks in the partner countries to ensure compliance and security. The broader adoption of UPI abroad aims to enhance the overall travel experience for Indian citizens and reinforce India's leadership in digital payments.
The initiative reflects the government's ongoing push to internationalise India's fintech ecosystem and support the growing outbound tourism segment. With the new countries slated for inclusion, Indian tourists can look forward to smoother, faster and more cost‑effective payments during their trips.
