India’s Tuition‑Free Primary School to Shut Down After 10 Years

✍️ Times of India 🗓 05 Aug 2026, 10:40 AM 👁 4

A tuition‑free primary school founded by Priscilla Chan in 2016 will close in June after a decade of operation, as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative ends its $125 million funding. The board cited below‑average academic results and will provide $50 million to help affected students transition.

The school, established in 2016, offered free education, healthcare and family support to low‑income children. After a decade of service, the board announced that the institution will close in June, citing academic performance that consistently fell below state averages. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which had provided $125 million in funding, will not renew its support beyond the upcoming academic year. In response, the initiative pledged $50 million to help students transition to other schools and to cover related costs.
