India's trade deficit widened to $31.98 billion in July, the largest gap in six months, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
India’s trade deficit for July 2024 rose to $31.98 billion, the highest level recorded in the past six months, the Ministry of Commerce released on Monday. The figure marks a 3.2 % increase from June’s $30.95 billion deficit.
The widening gap reflects a modest decline in exports, which fell 1.5 % year‑on‑year, while imports grew 2.7 %. Key import categories such as crude oil and gold were higher than usual, contributing to the larger deficit.
Economic analysts suggest that the dip in export growth is partly due to global demand softness and currency fluctuations that have made Indian goods less competitive abroad. Meanwhile, domestic demand for imported raw materials has remained robust.
The government is monitoring the trend closely, with officials indicating that measures to boost export competitiveness and manage import volumes will be considered to stabilize the trade balance in the coming months.
