The government has opened new inland waterway routes in Jharkhand, marking the first expansion of the national navigation network into the state.

New waterways in Jharkhand have been incorporated into India's inland navigation system, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways announced on Monday. The move brings the national network to a state that previously had no operational inland water routes.
The addition is expected to facilitate the movement of bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore and agricultural produce, offering a cheaper and environmentally friendlier alternative to road transport. Officials said the waterway could also ease congestion on regional highways.
The expansion aligns with the government's broader plan under the National Waterways Act to develop a network of five new waterways across the country by 2030. State authorities welcomed the initiative, citing potential boosts to local industry and employment.
Implementation will begin with pilot operations on selected river stretches, with full commercial service slated for the next fiscal year, pending necessary clearances and infrastructure upgrades.
