India's coal import volume fell by 5.83% in August compared to the previous month, according to the latest trade statistics.

India’s coal import volume declined by 5.83% in August, falling short of the July level, as reported by the Ministry of Commerce. The drop reflects a modest contraction in the country’s coal demand, which has been a key input for power generation and industry.

India remains the world’s largest coal importer, and even a small percentage change translates into a significant shift in trade flows. Analysts suggest that the decline could be linked to a combination of factors, including a temporary slowdown in power plant operations and a gradual shift toward renewable energy sources.

The trade data also indicates that the majority of coal imports continue to arrive through major ports such as Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, and Kandla. While the overall volume has dipped, the sector is closely monitoring market trends to adjust procurement strategies for the upcoming months.
