The 2027 national census will be conducted from Jan 25 to Feb 28, with field operations skipping poll‑bound and snow‑bound regions.

The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner has released the schedule for the upcoming 2027 Census of India. Field enumeration will commence on 25 January and conclude on 28 February, covering the majority of the country’s inhabited areas.
Poll‑bound regions, where elections are scheduled or ongoing, have been deliberately omitted to avoid logistical clashes and ensure voter safety. Similarly, snow‑bound districts in the Himalayan belt are excluded until weather conditions permit safe access.
The census aims to capture a comprehensive demographic snapshot, including population size, age distribution, literacy rates and housing characteristics. Enumerators will use a mix of digital tablets and paper questionnaires to record data, which will be aggregated centrally after the field phase ends.
Once the enumeration window closes, the data will undergo verification, tabulation and analysis before the first provisional results are expected to be released later in the year.
