Indian Oil partners with Haryana to convert waste into green energy

Indian Oil Corporation and the Haryana government have signed an agreement to develop facilities that will turn municipal and agricultural waste into renewable power, aiming to boost clean energy generation in the state.
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and the Haryana state government have entered into a joint venture to set up waste-to-energy (WtE) plants across the region. The partnership aims to process municipal solid waste and agricultural residues, converting them into electricity and bio‑fuels through advanced thermal and anaerobic digestion technologies.
Under the agreement, IOCL will provide technical expertise, financing and operational support, while the Haryana government will facilitate land allocation and ensure a steady supply of feedstock from local waste management agencies. The first plant is slated to be commissioned within the next 12 months, with an initial capacity of 10 megawatts.
Both parties expect the project to reduce landfill pressure, cut greenhouse‑gas emissions and create new employment opportunities in the renewable‑energy sector. The initiative aligns with India's broader clean‑energy targets and Haryana's commitment to sustainable development.
The collaboration also includes provisions for community outreach and training programs to build local capacity in waste handling and plant operation. Officials anticipate that the model could be replicated in other states if successful.
