The Union Minister for Agriculture unveiled a plan to establish 57 dairy cooperatives across Sikkim, aiming to boost local dairy production and farmer incomes.

The Union Minister for Agriculture held a press conference in Sikkim today, announcing a comprehensive plan to set up 57 dairy cooperatives throughout the state. The initiative is part of the central government’s effort to modernise the dairy sector and provide farmers with better market access and higher returns.

Under the scheme, each cooperative will receive initial funding, technical training and support for cold storage and processing facilities. The government estimates that the project could create thousands of jobs and increase milk output by up to 30% over the next five years.

Sikkim’s dairy farmers have traditionally faced challenges such as limited infrastructure and fluctuating prices. By forming cooperatives, the state aims to streamline supply chains, improve product quality and enable farmers to negotiate better prices directly with buyers.

The minister also highlighted the role of technology in the project, including the use of mobile apps for milk collection and real‑time price monitoring. Officials said that the cooperatives would be linked to national dairy boards to ensure compliance with quality standards.

The launch event was attended by local leaders, dairy farmers and representatives from the National Dairy Development Board, signalling strong support for the initiative from all stakeholders.
