An Indian Army mountaineering expedition successfully scaled Mt Khangchengyao in North Sikkim, marking a notable achievement for the armed forces in high‑altitude operations.
New Delhi, Sep 19 — A contingent of the Indian Army’s mountaineering wing reported the successful ascent of Mt Khangchengyao, a 6,527‑metre peak in North Sikkim. The expedition, comprising seasoned soldiers and support staff, reached the summit after a multi‑day climb that began from the base camp at Gurudongmar.
The team, part of the Army’s ongoing high‑altitude training programme, navigated challenging weather conditions and technical ice sections before planting the national flag at the summit. Officials said the climb demonstrates the army’s capability to operate in extreme terrains, which is vital for border security in the region.
Senior Army officials highlighted that such expeditions also serve to boost morale and provide valuable experience for troops deployed along the Indo‑China frontier. The successful summit adds to a series of recent achievements by Indian armed forces in the Himalayas.
The Ministry of Defence will formally acknowledge the expedition’s accomplishment in an upcoming ceremony, and the climbers are expected to share their insights on high‑altitude logistics and safety with other units.
