Wildlife officials are monitoring cheetahs released in Kuno National Park and Gujarat's Kutch region as part of the country's reintroduction programme.

The government’s cheetah reintroduction programme has now moved beyond the initial release in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, extending monitoring efforts to the arid grasslands of Kutch in Gujarat. Teams of biologists and forest officials are using GPS collars and field observations to track the big cats as they adapt to the new terrain.

Early field reports indicate that the cheetahs are establishing hunting routes and showing signs of territorial behaviour, although the exact number of individuals in each location remains undisclosed. Conservationists stress that continuous surveillance is crucial to address potential human‑wildlife conflicts and to ensure the long‑term viability of the species in these habitats.

The dual‑site approach reflects a strategy to diversify habitats, offering the cheetahs both the dense savanna of central India and the open scrub of the western coast. Success in Kuno and Kutch could pave the way for further releases in other suitable reserves across the country.
