The Indian government will install 50 additional weather radar stations nationwide, according to Dr. Jitendra, to boost forecasting accuracy and early warning capabilities.

New Delhi – Dr. Jitendra, a senior official with the Indian Meteorological Department, announced that the government has approved the deployment of fifty new weather radar stations across the country. The expansion is intended to fill gaps in the existing radar network and provide more granular data for severe weather monitoring.

India currently operates a limited number of Doppler radars, primarily concentrated in the northern and western regions. Adding the new sites will extend coverage to underserved areas, especially in the east, south and the Himalayan foothills, where timely data can be critical for flood and cyclone warnings.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences has earmarked funds for the project and expects the first batch of installations to be operational by the end of the next fiscal year. Once fully functional, the enhanced radar grid is projected to improve short‑term forecasts by several hours and reduce false alarms.

Officials said the upgraded infrastructure will also support research collaborations with academic institutions and improve data sharing with neighboring countries for cross‑border weather events.
