The Indian government has introduced stricter regulations for the transport of poultry, aiming to improve hygiene and traceability across the supply chain.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has issued a notification tightening the rules governing the transport of poultry across India. The move comes amid growing concerns over food safety and the need to curb the spread of avian diseases.

Under the new guidelines, all poultry transport vehicles must maintain a specified temperature range to preserve product quality. Drivers are required to hold valid certificates, and vehicles must undergo regular sanitation checks. Transporters will also be obliged to keep detailed logs of each shipment, enabling traceability in case of contamination.

The notification states that the rules will be applicable from the date of issuance, giving industry stakeholders a short window to align their operations. Penalties for non‑compliance include fines and potential suspension of transport licenses.

While the poultry sector has expressed concerns about the additional compliance burden, officials argue that the stricter standards will enhance consumer confidence and protect public health.
