India has formalised the names of 28 administrative regions in Ladakh, a move that Beijing has denounced as illegal and a violation of its territorial claims.

India announced on Tuesday that it has standardised the names of 28 administrative regions in the Union Territory of Ladakh, a step aimed at streamlining internal governance and mapping.

The move was met with immediate criticism from China, which issued a statement through its foreign ministry calling the decision "illegal" and a breach of its territorial claims over the region.

China’s spokesperson said the standardisation violated the spirit of the 1963 Sino‑Indian border agreement and could undermine the status quo on the disputed frontier.

India has not yet issued a formal response to the Chinese remarks, but officials have indicated that the name changes are an internal administrative matter and do not alter the country’s sovereignty over Ladakh.

The incident adds to ongoing tensions between the two nuclear neighbours over the status of border areas, with Ladakh remaining a flashpoint in their long‑standing dispute.
