India has joined the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, the world’s first treaty aimed at combating cyber offenses and fostering international cooperation.
In a move that underscores its commitment to cyber security, India has signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, commonly known as the Budapest Convention. The treaty, which seeks to harmonise legal frameworks and facilitate cross‑border cooperation, is the first international agreement dedicated to fighting cybercrime.
By becoming a signatory, India joins a growing list of nations working to curb online fraud, hacking, and other digital offenses. The convention provides a legal basis for extradition, mutual legal assistance, and the exchange of evidence among member states.
The Indian government has highlighted that the agreement will strengthen its domestic cyber laws and improve collaboration with foreign law‑enforcement agencies. Officials also noted that the treaty will help safeguard critical infrastructure and protect citizens from emerging cyber threats.
