India Sees Cybercrime Crackdown: 3,700 Apps Blocked, 32 Lakh Mule Accounts Flagged

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has blocked more than 3,700 apps and flagged 32 lakh mule accounts as part of a nationwide cybercrime crackdown.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced on Thursday that it has blocked over 3,700 applications from the Google Play Store and other platforms. The move comes after a review of apps that were found to facilitate money laundering, fraud and other illicit activities.
In addition, the ministry flagged 32 lakh mule accounts, which are used by criminals to transfer and launder proceeds from online scams. These accounts were identified through data analytics and cross‑checking with financial institutions.
The action is carried out under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and aims to curb the growing threat of cybercrime in India. MeitY said it will continue to monitor app stores and online platforms for suspicious activity.
Cybercrime investigators have urged the public to report any suspicious apps or accounts to the cybercrime helpline for swift action.
