At a United Nations meeting, India reaffirmed its support for increasing women's participation in political leadership, urging member states to adopt measures that promote gender parity.
India’s delegation at the United Nations reaffirmed the country’s commitment to boosting women’s representation in political leadership during a session of the General Assembly.
The statement, made by a senior foreign ministry spokesperson, underscored the importance of gender‑balanced decision‑making and urged member states to adopt concrete measures that facilitate women’s entry into elected and appointed offices.
New Delhi pointed to its own initiatives, including the 2023 Women’s Political Participation Programme and increased reservation for women in local bodies, as evidence of progress.
The government called on the UN and its members to translate global commitments into actionable policies, citing the Sustainable Development Goal target of gender parity in political leadership by 2030.
India’s reaffirmation comes as the UN prepares a resolution on women’s political empowerment later this year.
