India Marks 30 Years of 1991 Economic Reforms: Growth Amidst Challenges

✍️ Business Standard 🗓 24 Jul 2026, 10:18 AM 👁 2

India commemorates three decades since the 1991 economic reforms that opened up its markets, spurred growth, and brought new challenges. The anniversary highlights the nation’s progress and ongoing hurdles.

India is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the landmark economic reforms introduced in 1991, which marked a shift from a closed, centrally planned economy to a more liberalized and market-oriented system.

The reforms, spearheaded by then Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, liberalized trade, reduced import tariffs, encouraged foreign direct investment, and privatized several state-owned enterprises. Over the past three decades, India’s GDP growth has accelerated, and the country has become a significant player in global markets.

However, the journey has not been without challenges. Income inequality, unemployment, and regional disparities remain pressing issues, and critics argue that the benefits of growth have not been evenly distributed.

To mark the milestone, the government has organized a series of seminars, exhibitions, and policy forums aimed at reflecting on past achievements and charting a path forward for sustainable development.
