The 2027 Census of India commenced today, marking the first fully digital enumeration in the country's history.

The 2027 Census of India began its field operations today, initiating the country's most extensive data‑collection exercise. This launch signals a historic transition as the enumeration will be conducted entirely through digital devices, replacing the paper‑based methods used in previous censuses.

Enumerators across the nation are equipped with handheld tablets and smartphones that capture household information in real time. The digital platform integrates GPS tagging, biometric verification and instant data upload to a central server, aiming to reduce errors and speed up processing.

The census, which covers every village, town and city, is expected to run for several months before the data is consolidated. Officials anticipate that the digital approach will deliver more accurate demographic, socioeconomic and housing statistics, which are crucial for planning public services and allocating government resources.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has emphasized that the shift to technology will also enhance data security and privacy, with encrypted transmission and strict access controls throughout the enumeration process.
