India is extending its high‑tech Himalayan Surveillance Shield, an invisible security network, from the high‑altitude region of Ladakh to the eastern frontier of Arunachal Pradesh. The move aims to enhance border monitoring and rapid response capabilities along the sensitive Indo‑China frontier.

India has announced the expansion of its Himalayan Surveillance Shield, a sophisticated network of sensors, drones and satellite links designed to monitor the country's northern and eastern borders. The shield, which has been operational in Ladakh for several years, will now extend to Arunachal Pradesh, covering key border stretches that are prone to incursions and surveillance gaps.

The initiative, part of the broader Defence Innovation Strategy, leverages artificial‑intelligence algorithms to analyze real‑time data from multiple platforms. According to officials, the system can detect movement, identify potential threats and relay actionable intelligence to command centres within minutes.

Military spokespersons said the expansion will be completed in phases, with the first phase focusing on high‑altitude passes and the second on low‑lying areas near the McMahon Line. The project is expected to create a seamless, 24/7 monitoring network that complements existing radar and ground‑based observation posts.

India’s Defence Ministry highlighted that the shield will also support humanitarian operations, such as rapid medical evacuation and disaster response, in remote Himalayan communities. The rollout underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding national security while ensuring the welfare of border‑area residents.
