India has stated that the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan can no longer function as it stands, citing changing hydrological and geopolitical realities.
India’s foreign ministry announced that the Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, is no longer viable in its present form.
The statement followed a review of updated water‑flow data and noted that the treaty’s provisions are increasingly outdated amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Alongside the declaration, the government reiterated plans to develop 5,500 MW of hydroelectric projects in Jammu & Kashmir, which could influence future water‑sharing arrangements.
