India Amends FDI Rules to Permit Foreign Investment in Export‑Oriented E‑Commerce

The Indian government has amended its FDI policy to allow foreign direct investment in e‑commerce businesses that export goods from India.

The government has revised its FDI policy to permit foreign direct investment in e‑commerce platforms that export goods from India, lifting a previous restriction that limited such investment to domestic sales.

Under the new rules, foreign investors can hold up to 100 % equity in export‑oriented e‑commerce businesses without needing government approval, a move aimed at boosting India’s export competitiveness.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the amendment will help Indian exporters reach global markets and attract foreign capital, while clarifying that foreign investors will not control the day‑to‑day operations of the platform.

The changes are slated to take effect from the fiscal year 2024‑25, and companies will need to comply with the updated guidelines to receive FDI.
