India Aims to Expand Ramsar Wetland Designation, Greens Urge Stronger Protection

India is seeking Ramsar designation for additional wetlands, while environmental groups call for enhanced protection of existing sites.

India is working to secure Ramsar designation for several additional wetlands, a move that would place them under an international conservation framework. The Ramsar Convention, which aims to protect wetlands of global importance, has already listed a number of Indian sites. Environmental groups, however, warn that the focus should also be on strengthening safeguards for the wetlands that already enjoy Ramsar status. They argue that many of these protected areas face threats from development and climate change. The government’s push for more designations reflects a broader effort to enhance biodiversity protection and climate resilience across the country.
