The Income Tax North West Region has served notices to 926 tax defaulters in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Chandigarh, tightening compliance across the region.

The Income Tax Department's North West Region has dispatched formal notices to 926 individuals and entities identified as tax defaulters across five jurisdictions – Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. This coordinated action was announced by the department as part of its ongoing effort to improve tax compliance in the northern belt of the country.

The notices, issued under the provisions of the Income Tax Act, require the recipients to disclose undisclosed income, pay any outstanding dues and furnish required documentation within a stipulated time frame. The department has indicated that failure to comply could attract penalties, interest and possible prosecution.

Officials said the move reflects a broader crackdown on tax evasion, aiming to broaden the tax base and ensure that revenue collection aligns with the government's fiscal targets. The department will continue to monitor responses and may initiate further enforcement measures where necessary.
