Hundreds gathered in Imphal to demand that the National Register of Citizens be based on the 1951 census and to reject the proposed State Identity Register 2026.

On a recent day, demonstrators assembled in the capital city of Manipur, Imphal, to voice their concerns over citizenship documentation. The protestors called for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to be anchored on the 1951 census data, arguing that this would provide a clearer and more reliable basis for citizenship verification.

In addition to the NRC demand, the crowd demanded the rejection of the State Identity Register (SIR) slated for 2026. Protesters believe that the SIR could lead to further complications in identity verification and wish to see it scrapped.

The demonstration highlighted the ongoing debate in Manipur over the best approach to citizenship and identity registration, underscoring the community’s desire for transparency and fairness in the process.
