The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain across the Northeast, with potential flooding and landslides.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released its latest outlook predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the northeastern region for the next 48 hours. The advisory covers all eight states of the Northeast – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya and Sikkim.
Meteorologists anticipate rainfall totals ranging from 100 to 250 millimetres within a 24‑hour period in the most vulnerable districts, with higher amounts expected in the hilly and river‑fed areas. Such intensity is likely to trigger flash floods in low‑lying river basins and increase the risk of landslides on steep slopes.
State disaster management agencies have been instructed to activate emergency response teams, pre‑position relief supplies and, where necessary, issue evacuation orders. Residents are advised to stay alert, avoid low‑lying zones, and follow directions from local authorities.
The warning arrives as the monsoon advances in other parts of the country, while western regions face separate heatwave alerts, underscoring the varied weather challenges India faces this season.
