The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of a high risk of flash floods in the northeastern states as the monsoon season intensifies across the country.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood alert for the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland as the monsoon season gains momentum across India.

The alert follows a forecast of heavy rainfall in the region, which could trigger sudden and severe flooding in low‑lying areas. The IMD advised local authorities and residents to remain vigilant, prepare emergency kits and avoid travel through flood‑prone zones.

Officials in several northeastern districts have already begun setting up early‑warning systems and coordinating with disaster management teams. The alert comes amid a broader national forecast that predicts intense rainfall over the plains and coastal areas as the monsoon progresses.

The IMD’s warning is part of the department’s routine monitoring of weather patterns and is aimed at reducing loss of life and property during the peak monsoon months.
